The clicker is a helpful training tool, but you won’t need it forever. Once your puppy understands a skill and can do it easily, you can start to fade the clicker. This simply means using it less over time while keeping training fun and rewarding.

Here’s how:

  • Make sure your dog knows the cue well. For example, when you say sit, they respond right away, even with small distractions.

  • Begin clicking only every second or third time instead of every time. You can still give a treat without clicking.

  • After a few sessions, stop using the clicker for that skill and keep using treats and praise instead.

  • Save the clicker for teaching new skills. You can always bring it back when you need it.

Your dog will still enjoy learning, and you’ll still celebrate their progress. The clicker helps with teaching, but the habits—and the bond you build together—are what really last.
