The clicker is a great teaching tool, but it’s not something you need forever. Once your Puppy Pal understands a skill and can do it reliably, you can start to fade the clicker.
Fading means slowly using it less and less, while still keeping training fun and rewarding.
Here’s how to do it:
First, make sure your dog knows the cue really well. For example, if you're working on “sit,” they should sit right away when you ask — even with small distractions.
Start clicking every second or third time instead of every time. Still give a treat, but don’t always click.
After a few sessions, stop using the clicker for that behavior altogether — but keep using praise and treats!
Save the clicker for teaching new things. It’s like a training helper you can bring back anytime.
Your dog will still enjoy learning, and you’ll still reward them — you’re just growing beyond the training wheels.
Remember, the clicker is for teaching, not forever. What lasts is your strong bond and the great habits you’ve built together.
