Now that your clicker is loaded, you’re ready to start using it in training! The clicker works best when it’s used to mark the exact moment your dog does the right thing.
Here’s the rule: click first, then treat. Always.
The click is like saying, “Yes, that’s it!” You’re marking the behavior you want to see again.
Let’s try an easy one — sit:
Stand in front of your dog with a few treats in your pocket or treat pouch.
Wait for your dog to sit on their own.
The moment their bottom hits the ground, click!
Then reach into your pouch and give a treat.
Repeat a few times, then take a break.
You can also use the clicker when you ask for a cue (like “sit” or “down”). Just remember: click when your Puppy Pal does the right thing, not before.
Good timing helps your dog understand exactly what they’re being rewarded for. And don’t worry — if you’re a little late, your dog will still enjoy the treat. You’ll get better with practice!
Only click once per behavior. Multiple clicks can be confusing. Keep it simple: click once, then treat.
